The Romance Studio is a wonderful site offering honest reviews for romance books. Authors and publishers can submit a book for review. I did and rec’d a fantastic review for Scarlet Revenge. Check it out.
Coming from a screenwriting background, I jumped into Romantic Suspense on a wing and a prayer. My only research into the market was my memory. I’d read some romance as a teenager. I tended to like light romance with humor. If the heroine dressed up like a boy and hung out with the man of her dreams, until he realized she was the girl of his dreams, that suited me just fine. It certainly wasn’t a lot to go on for writing a modern romance, with a heavy dose of thriller.
Sometimes, however, not knowing what the market requires can be a good thing. I just wrote for myself.
The result is “Scarlet Revenge” a romantic suspense novel centered around FBI Analyst Caycee Scarlet. She’s too smart for her own good and clever as hell. She does and says things that I would be too polite to do or say. Guess that makes her an alter ego of sorts. She sure is fun to write.
Tackling the romance side of the book seemed the trickiest part of writing romantic suspense. I knew I couldn’t approach it from a ‘how-to’ style. Instead, I focused on foreplay. My romance is more about the tease that leads up to the act, putting my characters in unique situations and amping up the emotion that fuels their attraction. It has also been fun to write!
I hope you can join me on this journey with Caycee Scarlet.
